Marriott Aruba Properties Expiration: Everything You Need To Know

If you are a current member of Marriott Vacation Club and own a week in Aruba, or are looking into purchasing a week in Aruba, it’s important to know that all of Marriott’s Aruba properties carry an expiration date. In this blog post, we will discuss the expiration date for all Marriott Aruba Properties and what happens once the expiration date is reached. We will also provide a few tips on how to get the most out of your Marriott Vacation Club membership, so stick around!

Right To Use Timeshares

Owning a Right to Use timeshare means that you have the right to occupy the property, but don’t necessarily own the property itself. Right to use ownerships can be compared to leaseholds, in that there is an expiration date for the right to use the property.

Are Marriott’s Aruba Properties Right To Use Ownerships?

Technically, Marriott Vacation Club’s resorts in Aruba use what is known as a Certificate of Ownership, but for all intents and purposes, they act pretty much identically as other Right To Use ownerships.

Marriott Vacation Club International has leased the land from the government of Aruba until each resort’s respective expiration date. Since the land is leased from the government of Aruba a Certificate of Ownership is given instead of a Deed.

When an owner purchases a timeshare interest in these Aruba properties, Marriott awards the owner a Certificate of Ownership that grants the owner rights of occupancy for the duration of the lease that Marriott has with the government of Aruba. The Certificate of Ownership can be transferred to a new owner on the resale market, as well as transferred or willed to family members for their future use.

What Happens Once The Expiration Date Comes?

Marriott retains the option to renew its lease once the original agreement has expired. Therefore, it is projected that owners will be able to continue to use their week each year beyond the expiration date.

While there is no guarantee that Marriott will renew the leases once they expire, it seems likely given Marriott’s history of renewing other resort leases. For example, when the Marriott’s Maui Ocean Club lease was set to expire in 2016, Marriott renewed the lease for an additional 65 years.

What Should You Do If You Own A Marriott Aruba Property?

If you are a current owner of one of Marriott’s Aruba properties, there is no need to worry about the expiration date. You can continue to use your week each year and enjoy all that these beautiful resorts have to offer!

What If I’m Looking Into Buying At A Marriott Aruba Property?

If you are looking into purchasing a timeshare interest in one of Marriott’s Aruba properties, we recommend doing so sooner rather than later. As the expiration date approaches, the resale value of these properties is likely to go down as there is no guarantee that Marriott will renew the lease.

Purchasing a timeshare interest now means that you can lock in your vacation at these resorts for years to come and enjoy all that Aruba has to offer!
